Currently Reading: January

Lately, I've been diving into a mix of books and magazines, and I thought it’d be fun to share a little roundup of what I’ve been reading. Some of these are carryovers from December, one is a magazine I’ve been flipping through, another is a book I’m currently in the middle of, and the final one is something I’m planning to start this week.

Wintering by Katherine May is my current read, and I’m almost finished with this beautifully written book. It is poetic, reflective, and perfectly encapsulates the essence of the season. Here’s one of my favorite excerpts:

“We are in the habit of imagining our lives to be linear, a long march from birth to death in which we mass our powers, only to surrender them again, all the while slowly losing our youthful beauty. This is a brutal untruth. Life meanders like a path through the woods. We have seasons when we flourish and seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones. Given time, they grow again.”

This book offers thoughtful reflections on the season and what it means to slow down and embrace life’s quieter moments. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something meaningful to read during the winter months.

Modern Rustic Magazine has a spot on my coffee table, alongside a few design and art books I like to flip through now and then. I’m drawn to the cozy sophistication of the featured homes and the beautifully layered rooms in neutral palettes—it’s such a source of inspiration.

The Small and the Mighty and The Women are two books I recently read for a book club (I loved both of them click on the titles for more info). I’ve been able to get through so much more reading now that I’ve embraced Audible—something I was firmly against for a long time!

I love listening to audiobooks while cooking, driving, or exercising on the elliptical or rower. That said, I’ve learned they don’t work for me when I’m on the couch (I inevitably fall asleep) or while working (way too distracting).

What about you? Do you prefer physical books, audiobooks, or e-books? I’d love to hear how you like to read!

I first discovered Lee Hall by accident during a trip to Blowing Rock, NC. While visiting the Blowing Rock Art Museum, I stumbled upon an exhibit of her abstract expressionist work and was instantly intrigued (read all about it here). I also learned that she was an educator and author, as well as a close friend of Willem and Elaine de Kooning.

She wrote this biography about their lives and complex marriage, which I’ve been meaning to read. I’m excited to finally dive into it and learn more about her perspective and their fascinating world.

Well, that’s my little roundup of books and reads for now. I’d love to hear what you’ve been reading lately—any recommendations or current favorites? Let’s chat in the comments!
