Floral Muse: Art in Bloom at NCMA
Today I’m taking you on an artist date to Art in Bloom at the North Carolina Museum of Art, an annual show that pairs floral arrangements with works of art. As someone who loves gardens and flowers, this exhibit was a dream—full of color, texture, and inspiration.
I’ve tried traditional nature studies before, but just like with my winter journal, I kept asking:
· How can I access this with what I already have—my knowledge, materials, and creative habits?
· What do I already enjoy doing? How do I already create?
· What can I extract from this visit, and how can I use it as inspiration?
A few pieces really caught my eye and sparked ideas for mini handmade journals. They incorporate the mixed media techniques I love—layering, texture, and playful color palettes. Certain palettes and textures stood out and found their way into my work. You can look through these mini journals here.
Next time you visit a museum, let your eyes wander. Bring a sketchbook, take photos, or just enjoy the moment. It’s okay to return to the inspiration later—it’ll still be there.
