In the Studio: Meandering from Winter into Spring

This past season has felt like a bit of a funk—midlife, being 51, navigating family things, and carrying that underlying weight so many of us feel about the world right now...

Instead of pushing through it or trying to create on demand, I chose to pause and give myself permission to meander from winter into spring.

This is what it looked like for me:

Walks with Charlie. Small moments paying attention to life emerging in front of me each day.

Thoughts about how to bring these noticings back into the studio without the pressure to “make something”—colors, textures, wonderings, fragments of thought.

Reminders that creativity doesn’t always come from effort or urgency. It can be slow, mindful, and simple. Sometimes it begins with paying attention and giving myself space to be where I am, without rushing to the next thing.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, or in your own in-between season, maybe this is your permission too—to pause, to notice, and to trust that something will begin again.

(If you’d like to see more of this practice, watch here.)
