Art Journal: Collage

One of the benefits of teaching mixed media classes is that it encourages my own creative play. Collage is something that I have used in the past to add interesting details or texture to my mixed media art work. I more recently started practicing it on it’s own when I began teaching mark making and gelli printing to adults.

The growing piles of printed and painted papers I was creating for class and during demos naturally evolved into collages. You can watch me create some of the collages in this journal on my YouTube channel.

The collages above are an example of an exercise I encourage my students to try where they make a small series of collages using limited papers.

I can not tell you how much fun these are to make. It’s very easy to get lost in the process and lose track of time. I encourage you to grab scissors, a glue stick and some papers and give it a try. Go here for some ideas and remember to think out of the box and use whatever papers you have at hand.

Happy creating!
