November in the Studio
Welcome to November in the studio. I've been working on new art pieces for a holiday show at a local gallery. I have two canvas pieces that evolved from the work I have already been doing in my mixed media journals. I wanted to approach the canvas in the same way that I work in my journals and I'm quite pleased with the results. They’re a mix of my painted and gelli printed papers with other collage bits and swatches of paints and marks.
I also worked on a small series of paper pieces. They started as separate studies that I eventually stacked, layered, and revised, adding marks and colors to bring them together. I ended up calling the series “Eye Candy” because that’s exactly what they feel like. The marks are inspired by my walks in nature, which always offer the best visual treats, and the color combinations please me in the same way as a perfectly coordinated display in a shop like ZARA or a makeup counter lined with eyeshadow palettes does.
It’s not often that my work comes together this easily. But after months of gathering inspiration through color swatching, painted papers, collage, journaling, and painting, it makes sense. Nothing felt forced—the process was fluid, and bringing that same art journal energy onto canvas and paper has been genuinely satisfying.
You can watch me paint the edges of those canvases pieces above, and take a closer look at these paper pieces in the video above.
